As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, observed in the Month of October, the KGL Foundation organised a Free Health Screening and Blood Donation Event in Sunyani, the Bono Regional Capital.

Speaking at the event, the Programs Manager of KGL, Nii Ankonu Annorbah-Sarpei, said they organized the Outreach in October to give people the opportunity to screen for Breast Cancer as well as promote a culture of regular health check-ups among the people.

    ‎

‎ KGL Foundation is the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of the KGL Group and it seeks to look out for the underprivileged in Society with a view to addressing the multitude of social and economic issues in the country.

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month in full blast, KGL Foundation organized the outreach together with one of its partners in the region, WAN-HIVE GHANA, to provide an opportunity for peope to get screened for breast cancer as part of health care support for the underserved. The event also sought to assist the Blood Bank at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital by adding blood donation to the event.

    ‎

‎Residents of Sunyani turned out in appreciable numbers at the Victoria Park in the heart of Sunyani to donate blood and benefit from the health screening. There was screening for the Breast Cancer, Eye conditions, Hypertension, Blood Sugar and Malaria among others.

    ‎

‎ In an interview, the Programs Manager of the Foundation, Nii Ankonu Annorbah-Sarpei said a cardinal aim for organizing the outreach is to help instil the habit of regular health check-ups among Ghanaians.

He added that with October set aside to create awareness on breast cancer, KGL Foundation decided to support the process with the outreach.

“The Foundation believes in empowering the community to attend to their health issues by providing them a platform to find out the status of their health” Mr. Annorbah-Sarpei stated.

He went on to add that although they have worked extensively a cross the Country, they were yet to touch base with the Bono Region, thus it was imperative that they come to the region to work with their partner to mobilize the people, create awareness on breast cancer and encourage the people do regular check-ups.

Mr. Annorbah-Sarpei also expressed satisfaction with the turnout, saying “People are here to check their sugar levels, lipid profiles, we are also seeing people undertaking ear screening and and eye tests, there are quite a number of things going on here and we are really happy we’ve had the traditional authority here and all the key Regional Institutions also turning out and for us we are very satisfied with the turnout”.

    ‎

‎ The blood donation drive was a key part of the outreach which the Head of the Blood Bank at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, George Osei, described as a great help for his Outfit. “Blood donation is a civic responsibility which should be incorporated in our educational programmes”. Mr. Osei stressed.

He added that currently in hospitals nationwide there is a difficulty in sourcing blood and since it is not sold anywhere they have no option than to rely on the community to support them with blood.

He further said, “On occasions like this we appeal to the conscience of the people that they should voluntarily donate something to save our brothers and sisters who are hospitalized.

    ‎

‎Some of the beneficiaries of the KGL Foundation Free Health Screening and Blood Donation Event shared their thoughts. The Benkum Queen Mother of New Dormaa, Nana Akosua Asante Krobea, lauded the organisers of the Programme saying, she not only checked her breasts but also mobilized quite a number of people to join her to donate blood. Edward Dwomo Appiah, who described himself as a regular blood donor also praised KGL Foundation for reaching Sunyani with its community support initiatives.
