The former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has spoken out about a stabbing incident involving a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Thank You Tour.
Opening up on the details and circumstances leading to the stabbing incident, the former lawmaker said that an amount of GH¢1000 was given to the students who came to support him and sing, to be shared among themselves by one individual.
“I was on my way home when I got a call informing me of a student being stabbed and rushed to the Suntreso Hospital. When I inquired on what had happened, I was informed that one of my friends gave the student group after their jama an amount of GH¢1000 to share,” he said in an interview on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
According to him, the altercation occurred when one of the security details assigned to an individual he identified as Ali Suraj took the money and attempted to renegotiate with the students, offering them a smaller amount to share.
He further added that gunshots were fired by the security guys as a warning, accusing them of being intolerant.
“The security detail of Ali Suraj snatched the money from the students, which ensued in an argument between them with the students while demanding for their money. The security tried giving the students GH¢200 out of the total amount which the students opposed, raising concerns that the amount would not be sufficient considering their huge numbers.
“In the midst of the commotion, one of the security gave a warning shot and they are so intolerant. They are the security detail of Ali Suraj,” Agyapong added.
Asked who the guy was and the position he holds in the party, Agyapong said, “I don’t know what he does. I knew him from America but since he came, he has suddenly become a big man. When we were going, he wasn’t among us but when we got to Kumasi, he was already there.”
The former NPP presidential aspirant further stated that the students collected some of the fired pellets as evidence and presented them to the police when they filed an official complaint at the police station.
“The students acted smartly and took the car number (registration) of the Toyota Hiace full of security guys. At the early scenes of the program, these same security guys prevented the students from singing for me because I wasnt there and they even showed their guns to the students to intimidate them. The students took some of the pellets that were fired and showed it to the police at the station,” he stated.
On the back of this, Kennedy Agyapong said that he has officially withdrawn from the Thank You Tour.
He explained that his decision was driven by the need to prevent such incidents from recurring and to protect his followers from potential danger.
He questioned how such an incident could occur to students, let alone to his own supporters.
“The reason I am withdrawing from the tour is my followers who believe in my vision could suffer same fate because if this can happen to students then I feel it’s only right to stay away and let Dr Bawumia continue his tour. I believe this will help and we will also regroup ourselves at the appropriate time to help the party and enhance my chances,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, the student who was stabbed is currently receiving medical treatment.
