Digital media researcher Kelly Lartey Mensah has lauded Hon. Sam George, Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, for what he describes as a “transformational” briefing on Ghana’s digital future. The remarks follow the Minister’s July 3rd press update at the Ghana Digital Briefing, which outlined key interventions in the country’s digital and AI governance ecosystem.

At the center of the update was a strategic meeting held on June 26 between the Ministry and TikTok’s West African Government Relations Team, where discussions focused on content regulation, child safety, and responsible platform moderation.

“The initiative is a major milestone in our cultural and social transformation agenda for a better and equitable digital economy,” Kelly Mensah noted in response to the Minister’s proposals.

Digital Safety Gets a Policy Boost

Minister George expressed grave concern about the surge of inappropriate content—particularly life, sex, and explicit material—on TikTok, citing the platform’s growing influence among Ghana’s youth. He emphasized the Ministry’s collaboration with TikTok to:

    ● – Enforce age restrictions

    – Set up local content moderation teams

    – Block culturally inappropriate content

    – Ensure creator compensation fairness

    – Support STEM-based educational feeds under the One Million Holders Initiative

“Establishment of content moderation and filtering hubs in Ghana will streamline our digital content landscape and sanitize the online environment,” he said.

TikTok’s Role in Ghana’s Digital Economy

With TikTok now dominating digital engagement across the 18–30 age demographic, Ghanaian policymakers and researchers have pushed for a more localized, regulated, and ethical content system.

Kelly Mensah, founder of Cedi Web Technologies and a lead AI strategist, emphasized the importance of platform accountability.

“TikTok has gained astronomical popularity within the largest population gap in Ghana, and the need to keep an eye on content is key. If this agenda is manifest, Ghana’s digital revolution will see a more sanitized and financially viable online economy.”

“Entrenching our digital governance of platforms with laws and policies will give us control over our digital culture’s transformation and position digital as a tool for true national development.”

Mensah praised the current NDC administration and President John Mahama for listening to digital advocates and involving stakeholders in policy creation.

“This is long overdue, and Sam George has really scored a 9/10 with his work in the sector.” – Kelly said to www.cediweb.com
