Sir Keir Starmer paid tax on £16,000 worth of free clothing he received from a major Labour donor as he declared a total taxable income of more than £150,000 last year.

The PM’s latest tax return, published by Downing Street tonight, showed how Sir Keir earned a combined £130,583 in 2023/24 in his role as an MP and Labour leader.

But he also declared £16,000 in ‘other benefits’, £498 in self-employment income and £5,174 in income from savings.

This put Sir Keir’s total taxable income at £152,255, on which he paid income tax of £54,718.

No10 sources confirmed the ‘other benefits’ related to £16,000 of free clothing Sir Keir received from Lord Waheed Alli in the 2023/24 tax year.

These donations were part of the ‘freebies’ row that engulfed the PM shortly after he took office in July last year.

Sir Keir previously registered them as being ‘for the private office of the Leader of the Opposition’.

But, amid scrutiny over the lavish gifts bestowed on senior Labour figures by Lord Alli, they were later re-categorised as donations in kind of clothing.

The political row also became known as a ‘passes for glasses’ scandal.

Lord Alli – who donated spectacles as well as suits to Sir Keir – was given a sought-after Downing Street security pass shortly after Labour’s general election win.

The Labour peer has since handed back the pass, while Sir Keir, Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Deputy PM Angela Rayner have all said they will no longer accept clothing donations.

Tax returns for Ms Reeves and Ms Rayner showed how they also declared ‘other benefits’ as part of their taxable income for 2023/24.

In addition, the Chancellor earned £12,372 in self-employment income, which related to ‘book royalty and advance payments, and audiobook fees’.

Ms Reeves published a book titled ‘The Women Who Made Modern Economics’ in October 2023, when she held the role of shadow chancellor.

It saw her dubbed the ‘copy and paste shadow chancellor’ following allegations of plagiarism.
