A specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr Francis Baidoo, has cautioned against the use of kayamata products, warning that they can cause severe health complications, including organ failure, infections, infertility, and even death.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Elsie Lamar, featured in a new exposé on the `dark side of Kayamata’, aired on GhanaWeb TV on February 18, 2026, Dr Baidoo explained the potential dangers associated with both oral and topical use of the substance.
According to him, some Kayamata products are taken orally and can have serious internal effects.
“There are some Kayamata that are taken orally and once you take them orally, they circulate in the body. It’s the duty of the liver and the kidneys to deal with these substances. Some of these substances have bad effects on these organs and can lead to their damage and failure,” he said.
He further warned that failure of vital organs such as the liver and kidneys can be fatal.
“Once these organs fail, it’s not compatible with life and can eventually lead to the death of these individuals,” he stated.

Dr Baidoo also addressed the dangers of externally applied and internally inserted substances.
“These substances are also applied locally. Some are smeared around the external genitals and some are even inserted. We can start with the one that is smeared externally. If the woman is allergic to any of these substances, it can cause allergies to happen, swellings of the external genitalia,” he explained.
He noted that inflammation caused by such substances increases the risk of sexually transmitted infections.
“Also, when these inflammations are going on, there’s likely the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection,” he shared.
The medical specialist further warned that substances inserted deep into the vagina can lead to infections and long-term reproductive complications.
“The ones that are inserted and go deeper into the vagina can also lead to the woman getting infections. When the substance goes higher into the reproductive tract, it can affect fertility. In some cases, it can be so bad that it can lead to the closure of the vagina. When it happens like that, you would need surgery,” he added.
