The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has called for an end to the victimisation of journalists by politicians.

According to him, politicians must uphold the liberties and rights of journalists because journalism in Ghana should transcend partisan lines.

Justin Kodua made the call at a Thanksgiving service and Get-together meeting of the Ashanti Region Ghana Journalist Association (GJA) on Friday.

The event was attended by the media fraternity, personnel from security agencies, traditional leaders, and members from the various political divides.

It was chaired by the chief of Kwabre Kenyasi, Barima Fredua Agyemang Ababio, and graced by the Ashanti Regional minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene.

Kodua’s statement is a significant development, given the crucial role journalists play in promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

His call to action demonstrates his commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and press freedom.

The NPP General Secretary also appealed to journalists to prioritise truth in their reporting and resist the influence of monetary gains.

He said ethical journalism is essential in maintaining the integrity of the media and promoting a well-informed public.

The Ashanti Regional President of the Ghana Journalist Association, Kingsley Hope, in his speech, demanded the arrest and prosecution of some thugs who attacked journalists at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) recently.

The unfortunate incident happened during the Council of State election in Kumasi on March 10, 2025.

He stated that those involved should not be allowed to go unpunished, to serve as a deterrent to other people who see journalists as a “nuisance”.

Kingsley encouraged journalists by stating, “No journalist should ever have to fear while doing his/her job. We stand in solidarity with our colleagues who have been assaulted, and we demand that those responsible be held accountable.”

The chief of Kwabre Kenyasi, Barima Fredua Agyemang Ababio, who chaired the occasion, emphasised the importance of fact-checking in journalism during a speech.

He urged journalists in Ghana to verify information before publication to prevent the spread of misinformation and promote peace among the people.
