Julian Álvarez’s streak of silverware success has finally come to an end. For the first time since his professional debut, the Argentine forward finishes a season without winning a single trophy, following Atletico Madrid’s group-stage exit from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Since breaking into River Plate’s senior team in 2018, Álvarez had enjoyed an unbroken run of annual triumphs.
His debut season saw him lift the Copa Libertadores, and from there, the titles kept flowing.
Between River Plate and his time at Manchester City, Álvarez collected an enviable list of honours including the Copa Argentina, Copa América, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and a historic treble with City in 2023.
That season alone brought him the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League, Super Cup and the Club World Cup, further cementing his reputation as one of the game’s most decorated young forwards.
But 2025 has been different.
After joining Atletico Madrid in a big money move to La Liga, Álvarez’s brilliance continued.
He finished as the club’s top scorer with 29 goals across all competitions, seamlessly adapting to Diego Simeone’s system and becoming a fan favourite at the Metropolitano.
Despite his efforts, Atletico’s collective shortcomings proved costly. They were eliminated in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League, fell short in the Copa del Rey semifinals, and ended the La Liga campaign in third place, ensuring no domestic silverware.
The final blow came at the 2025 Club World Cup. Atletico’s hopes were dashed in the group stage despite a 1-0 win over Botafogo, with a heavy 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain all but ending their tournament.
That result sealed Álvarez’s first-ever trophy-less season, marking a stark contrast to the winning culture he had known year after year.
