It is with profound sadness that Fightnews must report that respected world class boxing judge Steve Morrow has passed. Morrow had a 31 years career as a police officer in Gilroy, CA, from which he retired in 2008. Prior to his retirement however, Morrow’s love of boxing led him to begin writing (for free) as a correspondent for the new defunct Flash and Boxing Update- an every-ten-days newsletter, which was THE source for boxing news pre-internet.
From there, Morrow forged connections which led to him training to become a boxing judge…and he never looked back. Over time, Morrow because a respected judge, mentor and trainer of judges, often leading training seminars and round-table sessions during the NABF conventions. But more than that, he was a cherished and supportive friend, husband, father and grandfather. His unsolicited messages and phone calls, reaching out to friends who were struggling with personal issues, letting them know, “I’m thinking about you,” were often just the thing the doctor ordered. Underneath that large, tough exterior, often associated with being a “cop,” was a teddy bear, a hilarious, comforting teddy bear. Ever the jokester, Steve can be found on the Facebook pages of many a friend, goofing off in photos. Steve had a credo by which he lived: “You set a code to live by… I won’t be wronged, I won’t be insulted and I won’t be laid a hand on. I don’t do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.” -John Bernard Books. Jan. 22, 1901.
