Cape Coast – The Member of Parliament for North Dayi, Joycelyn Quashie, has urged law enforcement agencies to implement stronger measures to end all forms of child marriage and the sexual exploitation of children below the age of consent.

Madam Quashie made these remarks at the Duo Concept Foundation’s “Up Girl Literary Project”—a reading and conversation program held as part of this year’s Ghana Association of Writers and Book Festival (GAWBOFEST) on Friday, September 19, 2015. The event, held at the Arts Center, Accra, focused on the book Talata: The Child Bride, published by Adwinsa Publications Ghana Limited, which addresses child marriage in Ghana with an emphasis on the liberation of the girl child.

Earlier, the MP joined the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations and Member of Parliament for Wa Central, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, for an engagement with students from various second-cycle institutions in Accra. They discussed the importance of reading and guided the students on how to develop effective writing skills.

In a magnanimous gesture to encourage and reward the students for their participation, Madam Quashie donated mathematical sets to all attendees. As a child rights advocate, the MP has worked diligently in her constituency to empower vulnerable children by providing essential learning materials and spearheading other social interventions.

Demonstrating her commitment to literacy, she also took part in a reading session with the students. She was joined by Kate Addo, Coordinating Director of the Public Affairs Subdivision of Parliament and founder of the Duo Concept Foundation, who underscored the importance of reading and cited existing laws safeguarding children’s rights. She urged participants to take advantage of these legal frameworks to protect the welfare of Ghana’s youth, while stressing the need to reduce—and ultimately eradicate—early child marriages in society.

The Duo Concept Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people through literary projects and community engagements. The Foundation also carries out philanthropic activities aimed at bridging social gaps among today’s youth. This event formed part of a two-day collaboration with GAWBOFEST, which brought together more than one thousand students from second-cycle institutions.
