Newly appointed Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has announced his first squad as the team prepares to face Morocco in a friendly later this month.

While the squad remains largely unchanged from the one left by former coach Nora Häuptle, a few new faces have been introduced including one standout newcomer: Josephine Afua Kyerewaa Bonsu.

Bonsu’s inclusion has sparked some debate among Ghanaian football fans, many of whom are unfamiliar with her background.

This piece sheds light on the latest addition to the Black Queens.

Who is Josephine Afua Kyerewaa Bonsu?

Born on August 20, 1999, in Berlin, Bonsu is a German-born Ghanaian footballer who plays as a forward for Carl Zeiss Jena in the Frauen-Bundesliga.

She began her football journey with the B-Junior team of 1. FC Lübars, making 16 appearances in the North/Northeast division of the B-Juniorinnen-Bundesliga during the 2014-2015 season and scoring two goals. The following season, she featured in 16 out of 18 matches for the same team.

Bonsu’s career progressed as she joined the second women’s team of Berliner FC for the 2016-2017 season. Two years later, she was promoted to the first team.

Over three seasons, starting in September 2018, she made 29 appearances and scored 13 goals.

During that period, her team won the regional championship but narrowly missed promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga after losing to SG 99 Andernach.

In the 2021-2022 season, she played for Türkiyemspor Berlin, a local rival, where she impressed with seven goals in eight matches.

In the 2022-2023 season, Bonsu joined FC Carl Zeiss Jena and quickly made an impact, playing 19 games in the 2nd Bundesliga and scoring one goal.

The following season, she stepped up her game, scoring six goals in 22 appearances as her team finished second in the table, securing promotion to the top division, the Frauen-Bundesliga.

Bonsu and her team made their Bundesliga debut on August 31, 2024, in a 2-0 away loss to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Her impressive performances in the top flight caught the attention of then-Black Queens coach Nora Häuptle, who traveled to Germany to watch her play and persuade her to represent Ghana.

So far this season, Bonsu has made 14 Bundesliga appearances, registering one assist but is yet to score.

However, she hopes to make a strong impact with the Black Queens as she embarks on her international career.
