Jose Mourinho has sued Galatasaray after the Turkish club accused him of racism. The 62-year-old Fenerbahce manager was banned for four matches and fined after a game against Galatasaray on Monday, February 24, 2025. The game ended in a goalless draw.

However, Mourinho’s post-match conference, where he said the Galatasaray bench was “jumping like monkeys” and the game was better for being refereed by a Slovenian ref rather than Turkish officials, sparked backlash from Galatasaray, who accused him of using racial slurs against players and officials of the club.

As such, the Turkish federation fined Mourinho over £32,000 for insulting the Turkish referee. They said his comments were offensive, broke the rules, and could provoke fans.

Fenerbahce also defended their manager, insisting his post-match conference was taken out of context and “deliberately distorted”. The club has now confirmed that the ex-Real boss has decided to sue Galatasaray.

He is seeking 1,907,000 Turkish Lira (around £41,500), a symbolic sum referencing 1907 – the year Fenerbahce was founded.

A statement from the club revealed it was for “non-pecuniary damages due to the attack on the personal rights of our technical director Jose Mourinho”.

Since the incident, Mourinho has received support from some players, including former Chelsea players Michael Essien and Didier Drogba, with Drogba revealing on social media that Mourinho was like a father figure to him when they worked together.
