Jonas Adjei Adjetey and VfL Wolfsburg have missed out on Bundesliga survival after suffering a painful 2-1 extra-time defeat to SC Paderborn 07 in the Bundesliga promotion playoff.
The Ghanaian defender remained on the bench throughout the decisive second leg at the Home Deluxe Arena as Paderborn secured promotion to the German Bundesliga.
After the first leg at the Volkswagen Arena ended goalless, Wolfsburg took an early lead in the return fixture through Dženan Pejčinović in just the third minute.
Paderborn responded strongly and levelled before halftime through Filip Bilbija in the 38th minute to force the contest into extra time.
The hosts eventually completed the comeback after Laurin Curda scored the decisive goal in extra time to seal a 2-1 victory and confirm promotion to the Bundesliga.
Paderborn will now join FC Schalke 04 and SV Elversberg in next season’s Bundesliga campaign.
Despite the disappointing end to the season with Wolfsburg, Adjetey remains one of the young Ghanaian defenders abroad and is still expected to push for a place in the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
