President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama has stated categorically clear that government will not fund supporters’ travel to the upcoming FIFA World Cup, citing the high cost involved.

The President made the remarks during the Ghana World Cup fundraising campaign held at the Kempinski Hotel, stressing the need for responsible use of public resources.

Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside 1966 champions England, 2018 finalists Croatia and Panama for the tournament.

Mahama explained that the decision aligns with recommendations from the Dzamepe Report. “In line with the Dzamepe Report, the government has no plans to allocate public funds to fly supporters to the World Cup,” he said.

He further highlighted the financial burden involved. “The logistical support for just 200 fans—covering travel and accommodation—is staggering, with estimated costs close to $2 million. We all want to see our fans in the stands, but we must be responsible with public resources,” he added.

Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and will wrap up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

They will also play pre-tournament friendlies against Austria and Germany in March, followed by games against Mexico in April and Wales in June.
