John Dramani Mahama, the president-elect, has started a round of diplomatic trips to neighboring nations in an effort to improve Ghana’s standing abroad and promote closer relationships within the West African continental area. The dates of these travels are in advance of his January 7, 2025, inauguration.

In Togo, Mahama met with President Faure Gnassingbé to start his diplomatic career. Mahama underlined in a social media post the significance of keeping the ties within the subregion stronger. “By working together, we can better impact the lives of our people, who are connected in tribe, history, and economy,” he said.

Mahama met with President Patrice Talon in Cotonou, Benin, after his departure from Togo. Writing, “I am committed to strengthening Ghana’s relations with all our West African neighbors,” Mahama reflected on the visit and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Ghana’s ties with its neighbors in West Africa.

Mahama is getting ready to take office in the upcoming weeks, and these visits are the first of his regional diplomatic initiatives.
