Award-winning Ghanaian gospel musician Diana Hamilton has shared her perspective on the role of technology, especially mobile phones and tablets in churches.

Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM, Diana Hamilton revealed that she no longer carries a physical Bible to church, opting to use her phone to access the Bible app and other spiritual contents.

Hamilton acknowledged the challenges of using technology during worship, noting that it requires “mental maturity” to stay focused on spiritual content.

“I don’t take a physical Bible to church. I read my Bible on my phone. I have the Bible app, I search using the phone. But it takes a lot of mental maturity to say I will not go on Facebook, I’m actually going on the Bible app. I’m going to pray.

“And when I’m going on Instagram, I’m going to search for things that will edify me, things that will bless me,” she said.

She also highlighted how algorithms on platforms like Facebook and Instagram can sometimes lead users astray by suggesting unrelated content based on past searches.

Reflecting on her visit to Israel, Diana Hamilton drew a parallel between Jesus’ ministry and the use of modern technology.

She recounted standing at the site where Jesus preached from a boat and realized that if Jesus were alive today, He would likely use social media to reach out to people.

“If Jesus was in this era, he would have a YouTube account, an Instagram account, a Facebook account.

“I realised that where he took the boat, it was obviously by the sea. That’s where people came to trade. It was a marketplace. A centre of attraction.

“So he was standing there and speaking. And I think we’ve come to a realisation that where the people are, we’re supposed to reach them and speak the word to them. Not going there to muddy yourself,” she said.

Hamilton’s comments come at a time when many churches have embraced technology, streaming services on platforms like Facebook and YouTube, despite initial resistance from some religious leaders.

She urged believers to use their phones and social media responsibly, ensuring that their online activities bless others and positively impact society.

“Make sure that whatever you’re using your phone for, it is blessing you, it is blessing others, it is affecting generations, it’s affecting society,” she added.
