Jeremy Clarkson and David Cameron have been credited with sparking a huge surge in checks for prostate cancer.

Visits to Prostate Cancer UK’s online risk checker rose 11-fold after they revealed their diagnoses. It said 2,000 men a day used it prior to ex-prime minister Lord Cameron, 59, revealing his diagnosis in 2025 – soaring beyond 22,000 in the week that followed.

A similar boost was seen after ex-Top Gear star Mr Clarkson, 66, announced his diagnosis, with visits up from 8,425 a day to 51,000.

It’s an uplift that has saved lives, said the charity, but Mr Clarkson insisted: ‘There is plenty more to do. I’ll keep saying it: Check your risk. It only takes a couple of minutes and it could save your life.’

Mr Clarkson and Lord Cameron are among survivors demanding wider screening – something this newspaper is campaigning for. In a letter to Health Secretary Yvette Cooper, they urged her to ‘commit to a targeted national screening programme’, adding: ‘Act now, rather than wait for further data while men continue to die.’

Mr Clarkson announced he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in episodes of his show Clarkson’s Farm in June. He later told The Sunday Times he is now in remission, while Lord Cameron has also revealed he is now cancer-free.

Amy Rylance, from Prostate Cancer UK, said: ‘We hear from so many men who say a celebrity diagnosis, like Mr Clarkson or Lord Cameron’s, inspired them to check their risk and in some cases saved their life.’
