Ghanaian media personality Bridget Otoo has criticised the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, following a recent statement that only some selected media houses would be granted access to collation centers during the December 7 elections.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on November 27, 2024, the outspoken journalist expressed her dissatisfaction, labelling the Jean-Mensa-led administration as the worst in Ghana’s history.

“You wanted your districts to select media. Jean Mensa and this commission are the absolute worst, and they stand alone!” she wrote.

Bridget Otoo went on to question the credibility of the Electoral Commission, expressing disbelief at the decision.

“You sat down, wrote this, and sent it. Is there any level lower you cannot crawl under?” she added.

    Background

On November 27, 2024, the Electoral Commission released a press statement addressing public concerns about its decision to limit media access at collation centers.

According to the statement, only 12 media houses would be granted access to regional collation centers, while 8 would be allowed at the constituency level.

In the statement, signed by Deputy Chairman of Operations Samuel Tettey, the EC said it had acknowledged the public’s concerns and stated that it would engage with media stakeholders, including the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), to find a more suitable solution.
