Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that his former club must sign at least two new attacking players this summer.

The Reds were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

That result, which came just five days after a Champions League exit at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, means that Arne Slot‘s men have now lost five games in all competitions this calendar year, despite being unbeaten in the Premier League since September.

Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager last summer and has since only made one first-team signing, bringing in Federico Chiesa – who scored a late consolation goal on Sunday following strikes from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak.

Carragher is adamant that Liverpool need to be much more active in the next transfer window.

Speaking on Sky Sports after Sunday’s Wembley loss, Carragher said: ‘It was probably one of the worst performances I’ve seen from Liverpool in a cup final.

‘But they’ve given so much this season and they’ve lost one league game. It’s hard to be too critical but it has shined a light on where Liverpool need to improve.’

Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk have all entered the final four months of their current contracts, meaning one or all of them could opt to leave Anfield on a free transfer this summer.

But Carragher reckons Liverpool will be in desperate need of attacking reinforcements even if Salah stays.

He added: ‘The lack of pace in attack is glaring. I feel sorry for Mohamed Salah, he was kept quiet by PSG and he wasn’t great today but he doesn’t get help from the other attackers.

‘The other attackers are good players but they’re not great. They need to go and buy two attackers this summer to play alongside Salah.

‘The last week has shown what they need in the summer. It’s exciting because Liverpool are going to win the league and they still need to improve in some areas.’
