The 13th African Games expenditure generated controversy in Ghana The 13th African Games expenditure generated controversy in Ghana

Some Ghanaian football fans have called for stiffer punishment for individuals found guilty of stealing money during the 13th African Games hosted in Ghana.

President John Dramani Mahama directed the Auditor-General to conduct a comprehensive forensic audit into the organisation and management of the 13th All-Africa Games held in Accra from March 8 to 23, 2024, following the submission of a report by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

According to the statement, the review will examine tender and contracting processes, funding sources, disbursements, sponsorships, and the overall management of resources allocated for the continental competition.

President Mahama further directed that the audit should evaluate the performance and coordination of all government agencies and committees involved in planning and executing the Games.

The Auditor-General has until the second week of December 2025 to present the findings to the president.

This move has sparked positive reactions from some sports fans, who commended President Mahama for taking steps to recover looted funds.

However, many individuals expressed concern that government-led investigations often fail to yield meaningful results in the long run.

They urged the president and the investigative body to ensure that anyone found guilty of corruption in the expenditure review be jailed as a deterrent.

Some also suggested that the audit will give former sports minister Mustapha Ussif an opportunity to clarify controversial figures in the expenditure and be held accountable.

Check out some of the reactions below:

Well done President Mahama and the current Administration!

Every great builder starts by clearing the debris.

The current government’s insistence on accountability isn’t delay it’s preparation.

Cleaning up the past makes way for a cleaner future.

    Refreshing leadership. Clear…

This was one of the scandals I so wanted this government to look into. How can you use $15m to feed athletes for just 2 weeks?
