Ghanaian boxer, Jacob Dickson, has announced his decision to quit the sport following the death of Ernest Akushey, popularly known as Bahubali, after their recent fight.

Bahubali passed away on September 23, 2025, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, eleven days after suffering a technical knockout defeat to Dickson at the Bukom Arena.

The fight, staged on September 12, ended with Bahubali taking heavy punishment before the referee stopped the contest.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb’s Joel Eshun, Dickson revealed that the experience has left him deeply shaken and unwilling to continue boxing.

“I’m done with boxing, I will find something else to do. I started boxing at 14 years old. I’ve fought with many people, none of the people I’ve fought has died. This is my first time. How will you feel if it was you?” he asked.

We can’t conclude that Bahubali’s death was caused by boxing – Mohammed Amin Lamptey

The boxer admitted that while he has not completely ruled out returning to the sport, he would need time to process the tragedy and consult with those close to him.

“If I want to box again, I think I have to go sit down, think, relax, have people talk to me,” Dickson added.

His comments come at a time when the Ghanaian boxing fraternity is still mourning Bahubali’s passing, which has cast a dark shadow over the sport.
