Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan was saddened after referees failed to turn up for a Division Three game between Jetta FC and Golden Amaris.

Gyan, who was present at the stadium, went live on Instagram to complain, mentioning that the club officials had to phone the referees.

The retired footballer added that such practices hinder investors’ desire to invest in local football.

“Warm-up is going on, the opponents are here, but there are no referees. They are now calling the referees to come. Do you want Ghana football to progress? The officials are not here. It’s crazy. This is why some stakeholders don’t want to invest in football.”

According to an account given by an X (formerly Twitter) user @QuartzSeth, the centre referee eventually showed up for the game but had to officiate without linesmen.

A similar incident occurred at Tema Community 8 Park, where referees did not show up for a game.

This adds to several misadventures that have eclipsed the country’s football this season, including a recent hooliganism incident in the first tier that led to the death of a Kotoko fan who was stabbed during a Nsotreman FC-Asante Kotoko game on February 2, 2025.
