Following his brief stint with Accra Hearts of Oak, legendary Ghanaian footballer Sulley Ali Muntari has passed a damning verdict on the Ghana Premier League, warning of its perpetual comatose if urgent and radical steps are not taken to reverse course.

Muntari told TV3 in an interview that the Ghana Premier League has reached the depths of the abyss and that he is genuinely concerned about the welfare and future of the players plying their trade in the Ghana League.

While he described his experience at Hearts of Oak as amazing due to the support he enjoyed from fans and the president of the club, the former Inter Milan midfielder is worried about the state of the league and is making moves to get some funds to support the product.

“I enjoyed it. Hearts fans and the president were amazing. The league is a big hole where they are dumping money. There is no future for the local league. I am hoping I can get some funds and really help them. It’s a mess. When I was there, it was a mess. Maybe now it is worse. If we don’t help these guys, we won’t get the top players,” he said.

Talking about the sanitation and welfare of players, Sulley Muntari lamented the poor conditions of the facilities which prevented him from sitting in the dressing rooms.

“The changing rooms smell. That respect is not there. I didn’t even want my laundry done. I would take it home. When you get into changing rooms, they smell bad. It is not just one team. Everybody,” he said.

Sulley Muntari spent a year at Hearts of Oak where he played 15 times, scoring once and providing two assists.

His outstanding performance led to calls for him to be called to the Black Stars.

The former Portsmouth and AC Milan midfielder retired in 2022 following the expiration of his contract with Hearts of Oak.
