Former Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, Catherine Afeku, has described the New Patriotic Party‘s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections as a tsunami the party did not anticipate.

Speaking in a recent interview on Joy News, she acknowledged the need for humility in accepting the outcome of the elections and urged the NPP to drop the blame game and focus instead on internal unity and reflection.

‘I’ve been through five election cycles, but 2024, the tsunami, we didn’t see it coming. So we’ve taken it with humility, my perspective.

“We’ve done the assessment and we’re going through the amendments that is forthcoming that we will go and see how we come back to the drawing board. To the rank and file of the party, we should unite”, she urged.

Reflecting on the loss, Afeku, who left office in 2020, acknowledged that while she was no longer a minister or Member of Parliament during the 2024 elections, she remained a committed member of the governing party.

“I came out of office in 2020, but I was still part of the government and I will defend it with my heart,” she said.

She acknowledged the need for humility in accepting the outcome of the elections.

She also urged the NPP to drop the blame game and focus instead on internal unity and reflection.

“You have to take it with humility. Denial will not help. We didn’t see it coming. The tsunami of 2024, we didn’t see it,” she said.

The former legislator further stressed the need of accepting defeat and using it as a springboard for rebuilding.

“It’s just a feeling of when you are defeated, you know, you get dejected and everybody starts to do the blame game, and it’s your fault, so we need to first accept we were defeated. First you deny, and then you accept, and then you, you go back to drawing boards of grievance.

“And then you, you start putting your stuff together. So right now, the key challenge is being united”, she added.
