Manchester City’s new signing, Antoine Semenyo, made his mark once again in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Tuesday, January 13, 2025.

However, it was a disallowed goal that dominated headlines after City’s 2-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The Ghanaian forward opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, showcasing the sharpness and confidence that have defined his start at the Etihad Stadium.

Moments later, Semenyo thought he had added a second, flicking Tijjani Reijnders’ cross past Nick Pope, only for officials to rule it out following a lengthy VAR check.

Semenyo shared his frustration on the on-field camera after the final whistle.

“The second goal should’ve counted by the way, just saying,” he said.

His frustration was clear but measured. The decision came after VAR determined that Erling Haaland had interfered with play from an offside position, jostling for position with Newcastle’s Malick Thiaw.

But many have questioned the call.

Despite the setback, Semenyo remained upbeat when addressing the media.

“The referee [Chris Kavanagh] came and spoke to me and told me what was going on. But yeah, it is what it is,” he said.

Fresh from a debut that brought a goal and an assist in City’s 10-1 FA Cup win over Exeter, the £62.5 million forward continues to cement his influence at Manchester City, combining impact on the pitch with a candid willingness to express himself off it.
