President John Dramani Mahama has highlighted the impact of popular American livestreamer IShowSpeed’s recent visit to Ghana.

Speaking at the Ghana-Zambia Business Forum in Lusaka, Zambia, the President reflected on the influence of social media, citing IShowSpeed’s tour of the Shea Butter Museum in particular.

President Mahama revealed that reports indicated approximately 20 million online searches for shea butter were recorded after the visit was streamed live on YouTube.

“He came through Ghana. And we have a product we call Shea butter. Women love it a lot because now it’s in a lot of cosmetic products; it’s in creams and all that because of the good effect it has on the body.

President Mahama reacts to IShowSpeed’s viral shea butter massage in Ghana

“Apparently, I didn’t know we had a Shea Butter Museum in Ghana, and this young man visited. About 10 girls were massaging him with Shea butter. I’m told that after he left, there were millions of searches on the internet for what Shea butter is and what Shea butter can be used for,” he noted.

President Mahama added, “He did more advertising for us than we could do ourselves. After he left, it was reported that there were 20 million searches for Ghana, asking where Ghana is and what Ghana is about and all that,” he added.

Using this scenario, President Mahama noted that this was proof of the impact of social media on national development.

He, however, warned that cases of cybercrime also serve as a source of concern.
