President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s management of the Energy Sector Levies Act (ESLA) proceedings has come under fire from Isaac Adongo, the member of parliament for Bolgatanga Central. Adongo claims that despite receiving an astounding ₵45 billion from ESLA, a fund created to handle financial difficulties in the energy sector, the government was unable to appropriately manage a ₵9 billion issue. The lawmaker’s remarks have sparked new discussions about government openness and spending.

Speaking on the subject, Adongo cited what he believes to be inefficiencies and poor management in the use of public monies, raising doubts about the reasoning of allocating such a substantial amount without seeing any noticeable outcomes. The MP claims that the ₵9 billion debt that ESLA was originally intended to pay off is still outstanding. He claims that this creates grave questions regarding whether the money was spent as planned or was misappropriated.

The public’s response to the MP’s comments has been mixed, with many urging a thorough examination of ESLA monies to guarantee accountability. Critics contend that the situation, in which citizens suffer the brunt of higher levies without commensurate benefits, is indicative of a broader trend of inadequate financial oversight. Government supporters, meanwhile, maintain that the money has been used for long-term fixes to stabilize the energy industry and call for patience as these investments pay off.

As Ghanaians want more accountability from their leaders, this most recent controversy highlights the mounting conflict over the country’s fiscal management. The need for openness in the use of ESLA funding is anticipated to take center stage in public conversation in the upcoming weeks, increasing pressure on the administration to give definitive answers given the billions at risk.
