A private legal practitioner, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, has called on the rank and file of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to take decisive action against officers captured in a viral video assaulting a civilian who was granting an interview to a Joy News journalist.
The incident which occurred at a demolition site which happened to be a warehouse belonging to businessman Daniel McKorley in Accra, has sparked widespread condemnation from the public.
According to 3news.com report on August 1, 2025, Brako-Powers described the conduct of the uniformed officers as unacceptable and a threat to press freedom and civil liberties.
He explained that ‘such intolerance’ displayed by the personnel from ‘Ghana’s number one disciplined force’ should not be entertained.
“These days, it appears our security agencies are becoming intolerant. Such intolerance from personnel of ‘Ghana’s number one disciplined force’ should not be entertained,” he stated.
The Ghana Armed Forces has since launched an investigation into the incident, which involved both military and National Security operatives.
President John Mahama has also condemned the incident, describing the conduct of the officers as ‘unacceptable’ while calling for a thorough investigation.
Brako-Powers, however, cautioned against any attempt to shield the officers involved and urged the military leadership to ensure transparency and accountability.
“We want them to get to the bottom of this, and the people found or seen in the video should be punished to send a strong signal to the others,” he indicated.
He also referenced past incidents of assault on journalists, including an attack on a media practitioner during an election rerun in Ablekuma North, where a senior police officer was later interdicted.
Brako-Powers further appealed to the Electoral Commission to ensure that the upcoming by-election in the Akwatia Constituency is conducted in a peaceful and secure environment, free from intimidation by security personnel or political party supporters.
