Theophilus Tawiah, a tax lawyer has advised President John Dramani Mahama to increase the betting tax instead of scrapping it.

According to him, the president should consider increasing the tax to 20% to discourage bettors from engaging in the act, which is becoming increasingly prevalent.

The tax lawyer asserted that the growing prevalence of betting in the country is worrying, considering its negative impact on those involved.

Speaking on “The Agenda” aired on TV3, while discussing Ghana’s taxes, Tawiah urged authorities to implement measures to curb the menace of betting by increasing the betting tax.

“Betting tax should be increased to 20 percent to discourage persons who bet,” he suggested.

Meanwhile, Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, assured the public during his ministerial vetting that scrapping the betting tax would be one of his first acts in office.

Other government officials including George Opare Addo have reiterated that the betting tax would be removed.
