Some hawkers operating along the Kasoa-Mallam stretch of the Accra-Cape Coast Highway have expressed mixed feelings over the ongoing road rehabilitation works, revealing that improved traffic flow has negatively affected their businesses.
Although they welcome the intervention, which has eased congestion along the busy highway, some hawkers say the reduction in traffic build-up has significantly affected their daily sales.
One trader explained that the heavy traffic previously provided an opportunity for roadside vendors to sell their products to motorists and passengers caught in congestion.
“It’s good that the road has been fixed, but honestly, it has really affected our business. The traffic build-up used to help us sell, but we’re unable to make sales now because traffic flows freely,” the trader lamented.
Other traders along the stretch shared similar sentiments, expressing concern about the impact of the improved road condition on their livelihoods.
The development follows the commencement of rehabilitation works on the McCarthy-Mallam stretch of the Accra-Cape Coast Highway after weeks of complaints from motorists and commuters.
Joy FM’s Super Morning Show had repeatedly highlighted the deteriorating condition of the road following numerous calls and messages from frustrated road users.
Motorists complained that potholes and damaged sections had worsened congestion, prolonged travelling times and disrupted their daily activities.
One commuter residing at Kasoa Millennium City Estate previously recounted the difficulty of reaching Mallam Junction despite leaving home early.
The rehabilitation works have since brought some relief to motorists, with improved traffic movement reducing the prolonged delays previously experienced along the stretch.
However, for roadside traders who relied heavily on stationary vehicles and slow-moving traffic to attract customers, the improved conditions have presented an unexpected economic challenge.
