The Executive Director of the Right to Information (RTI) Commission, Genevieve Shirley Lartey, has stated that institutions must play a critical role in making information accessible to the public in line with the Right to Information Act. (2019)

In an interview with GhanaWeb TV during the launch of its fifth anniversary celebrations on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, she explained that it is mandatory for every institution to have a desk to handle Right to Information (RTI) requests.

“We continue to sensitise these institutions, we write to them, and we train the information officers, to know that they are mandated to have information officers in every institution.

“They ought to have a designated desk for writing information activities and as a Commission, we go out to educate these information officers and the institutions, so that they would know what to do when individuals or institutions or the citizens come forward with such requests,” she noted.

Geneieve Shirley Lartey urged institutions to be proactive and publish information on their websites.

“We want to encourage institutions to be proactive, they should put out information on their website, so that it would be easily accessible to the ordinary citizens,” she remarked.

Since its establishment in 2020, the Commission has worked to advance the right of access to information.

The fifth-year anniversary of the Commission was held under the theme, “Championing Transparency and Accountability through Access to Environmental Information in a Digital Era”.
