Former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joseph Ade Coker, has issued a stern reminder to party members and leaders about the importance of staying connected to grassroots supporters and strongholds.
Speaking on Adom TV during an interview on December 31, 2024, he emphasised, “Even though we are for the development of the whole of Ghana, there must be a little emphasis on regions that are very loyal to us—such as the Northern Region, parts of the Eastern Region, Volta Region, and Greater Accra. So, it should be holistic development for the entire country, but emphasis must also be placed on your strongholds.”
He reflected on lessons learned from the past years in opposition and the recent elections, stressing that neglecting the party’s base and strongholds could lead to severe consequences from the people of Ghana.
“A lot of lessons have been learned in the last four years, and in this particular election. If you neglect your base and neglect the people of Ghana, they will punish you,” he warned.
Ade Coker condemned certain behaviors exhibited by party-backed appointees and their supporters.
He cited instances where constituents were denied help by officials who claimed their positions were earned by their own merit, ignoring the party’s role in their appointment.
“When you are in a party and you go to see a minister to place your child in National Service and he tells you that it is not the party that placed him there, but his own merit, it is very disheartening.
“And I’m sure most of their MPs would say they got their positions by their own merit, forgetting that they stood on the party’s wings to get there. Those are the kinds of things that our incoming appointees should guard against,” Ade Coker explained.
He added, “You get to the position because you rode on the wings of a party. Those down there, by their sweat, gave you a chance. You should open your eyes and make sure that you can’t do everything. But at least, when you do one or two or three things, some will testify that you did a good job. Even if you couldn’t finish, those who appreciated what you did will come and testify. And those who have not yet had this, they’ll be patient. I agree with you, we need to make sure that going forward, we remain grounded in our values.”
