A historic boulder has fallen in the Polar Cave Park after standing tall for 104 years, prompting the park, which sits near the White Mountain region, to temporarily shut its doors for the rest of the year.

The iconic stone, which weighed over 100,00 pounds and attracted thousands of visitors each year, fell on Sunday in Rumney, New Hampshire.

A hiker walking along the trail posted a video capturing the moment she realized the railings on the trail to the wooden walkway were smashed and destroyed as a result of the mega rock’s massive fall.

The hiker then noticed the mysterious hanging boulder sign near the now-fallen rock.

The sign stated: ‘This boulder is cracked through and rests on 3 contact points in the back. It weighs 80 tons, 75 percent of which is hanging over your heads.’

The Polar Caves park announced a press release on their website due to the wreckage, stating that the ‘mysterious hanging boulder fell yesterday, October 18, on the final day of our 2026 season.’

The Polar Caves website then went on to state its gratitude, considering park-goers were not injured during the incident.

‘We are incredibly grateful that no one was injured in the incident,’ a spokesperson for the park said in a statement.

‘During the off-season, Polar Caves will assess the site to determine appropriate next steps.’

‘We are committed to ensuring that Polar Caves continues to be a fun, memorable, and safe family attraction for generations to come,’ the statement added.

‘We thank our guests and community for their continued support and look forward to welcoming everyone back for the 2027 season.’

The Polar Cave Park averages approximately 55,000 visitors yearly; some of the main attractions of the park include the Nine Granite Boulder Caves, the Nature Trails the Animal Exhibit, and a Boulder Maze.

Since the park has already shut down for the winter, the collapse won’t impact current visitors.

Management plans on using the off-season to assess safety and decide how to handle the impacted cave trail going forward.

The Daily Mail reached out to the Polar Caves Park for further comment.
