The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has officially recognised Ghanaian boxer John Laryea, also known as “The Expensive Boxer,” as the Continental Africa Featherweight Champion.

During Legacy Rise Sport’s Showdown boxing event on December 20, 2025, at the Legon Sports Stadium, Laryea overcame a tough challenge from Holy Dorgbetor to claim the continental crown, though he had not yet received international recognition.

In a statement released on January 13, 2026, the international body confirmed that the feat has been recorded in their official records and extended their congratulations to the boxer.

They applauded Laryea for the achievement and urged him to represent the IBF with honor while continuing his exploits to join the ranks of the sport’s greats.

“The IBF is honored to officially recognise you [John Laryea] as the IBF Continental Africa Featherweight Champion. Your win over Holy Dorgbetor on December 20, 2025, in Accra, Ghana proves to the world you are a true champion.

“We commend you for acquiring this great accolade and know you will represent the IBF with great honor, distinction, and integrity. When the time comes, we will contact you regarding future mandatory defenses,” the statement, signed by Vice Championships Chairman of the International Boxing Federation, Carlos Ortiz Jr, read.

This recognition also serves as a huge endorsement for the event organised by Legacy Rise Sport CEO Sharaf Mahama, who is championing the cause of hosting boxing events for both local and international fighters to showcase their potential for global recognition.
