Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo has opted not to comment on the petition seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, citing her recent swearing-in as a member of the Council of State and her unfamiliarity with the petition and its response.

Speaking to the media, she clarified that the matter had not reached the Council of State, making it inappropriate for her to express an opinion at this stage.

“That has nothing to do with the Council of State at this stage. It has not reached the Council of State, and I’m not going to prejudge anything. What I’ve seen of the petition is what I saw in the newspaper. I have not seen the Chief Justice’s response,” she stated.

Dismissing the idea of weighing in on the issue, she emphasized that she does not hold any supervisory role over the Chief Justice.

“I will not do that. I’m not her boss. As far as I’m concerned, she’s a judge performing her judicial function and a Chief Justice performing her administrative function,” she added.

While refraining from commenting on the petition, Sophia Akuffo reiterated her long-standing stance on judicial reforms, particularly regarding the appointment process for Superior Court judges.

“There might be some reforms needed in the methodology for the selection and appointment of judges to the Superior Courts. I have already spoken about it many times, and I still stand by that. In the 21st century, we need a more transparent method of selecting people to assure that it is always by merit,”

    she asserted.
