Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, on his victory in the 2024 general elections.

In an official letter to Mahama, President Putin expressed his deepest wishes for success as Mahama prepares to take office on January 7, 2025. The Russian leader also wished the President-elect good health and well-being as he starts his new term.

“Esteemed Mr. Mahama!” Please accept my sincere congratulations on your election as President of the Republic of Ghana. President Putin added, “I wish you success, as well as good health and well-being.”

The letter expresses Russia’s hope about the future of its relations with Ghana under Mahama’s leadership. Putin cited the two countries’ historically excellent and cooperative relations and expressed hope for increased collaboration in important sectors during Mahama’s presidency.

“Traditionally, relations between Russia and Ghana have been amicable. I hope that your efforts as Head of State will help to further strengthen mutually advantageous bilateral cooperation in a variety of spheres,” Putin said.

This congratulatory letter came just after Ghana’s Electoral Commission announced John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, as the winner of the December 7 election. Mahama won decisively, with more over 56% of the total votes, defeating his primary rival, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

President Mahama’s return to power is a watershed point in Ghana’s political history, with citizens ready for new ideas and leadership. The swearing-in event, slated for January 7, 2025, will officially begin Mahama’s government.

Putin’s message demonstrates Russia’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with Ghana. Given Ghana’s expanding prominence in West Africa, Putin’s words suggest a willingness to strengthen collaboration in trade, energy, education, and technology.

As Mahama prepares to take office, global powers, particularly Russia, have expressed greater interest in Ghana’s economic and political orientation. Putin’s demand for “mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation” paves the way for further measures to develop Ghana-Russia relations in the future years.
