Ghanaian songstress Efya has reiterated her strong stance against sexual violence and online harassment, advocating for more severe punishments for perpetrators, including castration.

In a recent interview with BBC Pidgin, Efya addressed issues of sexual violence against women, stating that the current legal penalties are not sufficient to deter offenders.

She expressed frustration with how rape suspects are often granted bail and returned to society.

“We should get some drastic punishments for those who commit gender-based abuse.

Some of these people, when they get arrested, are granted bail and are allowed out into society to do that. It doesn’t serve as a deterrent to them or others,” she said.

She called for stricter consequences for those who commit such acts, stating, “I wish that those who commit rape should be castrated.”

On the subject of cyberbullying, Efya said she does not engage with online negativity, noting that such comments do not contribute to her financial success or peace of mind.

“I don’t pay attention to negativity; it doesn’t bring me money or peace of mind. As for those who bully others online, their time will come,” she added.

The ‘Best in Me’ singer has been vocal about her views on sexual harrassment, especially of minors.

Currently, countries including Pakistan, South Korea, the Czech Republic and Madagascar allow for the castration of rape offenders.
