President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed growing speculation that he may seek another term in 2028, firmly stating that he will not contest in Ghana’s next general elections.

The President, who arrived in Singapore on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, for a three-day State Visit, reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s presidential term limit, stressing that his decision would allow him to enforce fiscal discipline without political pressure.

For months, sections of the public and political commentators had suggested that President Mahama could be persuaded to run again.

But the President has now put those rumors to rest, making it clear that he has no intention of returning to the ballot.

Explaining his decision, President Mahama said stepping aside in 2028 would give him the moral authority to prioritise the national interest over electoral considerations.

“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” he said.

During bilateral discussions with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, President Mahama also criticised the practice of incumbent governments circumventing fiscal safeguards to curry favor with voters, a cycle he said he was determined to end.

As part of his visit, he will meet Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, deliver the keynote address at the 8th Africa, Singapore Business Forum (ASBF), and headline a Ghana country-specific Investment and Business Forum to deepen trade, investment and partnerships between the two nations.
