Energy expert, Kwadwo Nsafoah Poku, has announced that he will not contest in the presidential primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), citing his support for the former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on Okay FM and monitored by GhanaWeb on Thursday, June 19, 2025, he stated that Dr Bawumia remains the most well-resourced and capable presidential candidate who deserves a second chance.

“They (flagbearer aspirants) know that the person who is the most favoured is Dr Bawumia. He has the most resources to go around, with a proven record across the country.

“I have told him that I won’t contest, and if he contests, I will support him because I feel Ghanaians did not listen to Dr Bawumia because they were angry with Nana Addo. So, we need to give him that chance, for Ghanaians to hear him out,” he stated.

The NPP has officially scheduled its presidential primaries for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The decision was reached during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

In the party’s last presidential race in 2023, Nsafoah Poku failed to make the top five.

He secured only 3 out of 926 votes cast, placing eighth out of ten aspirants.
