Northern Regional Minister-designate, Ali Adolf John Northern Regional Minister-designate, Ali Adolf John

The Northern Regional Minister-designate, Ali Adolf John, has announced plans to introduce apprenticeship programs as a means of addressing rural-urban migration of young girls from the Northern part of the country to cities.

Speaking during his vetting in Parliament on January 23, 2025, he stressed the need for creating sustainable job opportunities in the region to discourage rural-urban migration.

“I have already started thinking about our brothers and sisters who find their way to Accra to do all sorts of menial jobs. The best I can do is, first of all, to make home a very attractive place so that we don’t get further girls and boys migrating from Tamale and, for that matter, the Northern Region, to any part of the south not made in Accra,” he stated.

Outlining his plan, he stated, “We shall initiate apprenticeship training. Those who are interested in becoming hairdressers, seamstresses, and some who want to go into petty trading. We shall introduce some packages to be able to support them to start going into these ventures,” he stated.

Many young women from the Northern part of the country migrate to southern cities in search of work due to the lack of economic opportunities.

These women often end up with menial jobs, which often leads to exploitation and poverty.
