Mustafa Aderonke, aged 34 and from Epe, Lagos State, has shared how she escaped her mother’s attempt to force her into marriage.
In an interview on the Talk-To-B Podcast, Aderonke explained that after completing secondary school and sitting for WAEC, a married man with six children began visiting her family’s home.
He wanted to marry her, but she refused because he already had a wife and many children. Neighbors advised him to speak directly to her mother.
She recounted that her mother eventually approved of the proposal and repeatedly urged her to accept.
Aderonke said she told her mother she wasn’t ready for marriage and wanted to focus on learning trades such as tailoring and hairdressing, but her mother ignored her wishes.
Faced with unrelenting pressure, she decided on an unconventional plan—asking her boyfriend to sleep with her.
She believed that if she got pregnant, her mother would have no choice but to abandon the arranged marriage.
“After WAEC, a man started coming to our house. He told me to date him, but I refused because he was already married with nearly six children.
People in the street told him to see my mother. When my mother brought it up, I said I couldn’t marry a man with a wife and children because I had many things to do.
I wanted to learn tailoring, hairdressing, and more, but she wouldn’t listen. Back then, I had a boyfriend, and I was still a virgin.
I went to him and told him to disvirgin me. I thought to myself, ‘Once I become pregnant, she won’t give me to another man.’”
