King Promise won the TGMA 2025 Artiste of the Year King Promise won the TGMA 2025 Artiste of the Year

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Gregory Bortey Newman, popularly known as King Promise, has revealed that while he wasn’t certain of winning the ultimate award at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), he made a conscious effort not to doubt himself.

Speaking in an interview on Daybreak Hitz with DJ Slim on May 13, 2025, King Promise shared that he chose to stay positive and hopeful, focusing on the possibility of success rather than defeat.

“It was the mind-set, you are never so sure like you don’t know the result, you don’t know what’s going to happen but in my mind, I couldn’t defeat myself. I couldn’t say if I don’t win, I told myself I’m not going to say if I don’t win. Why should I say that? If I win so it’s more like a mind-set thing” he stated.

When asked if he had his own speech and everything prepared before winning the award, he said that he didn’t prepare any speech but KillBeatz asked him to write something down because he had a feeling he would win the award.

“No I didn’t, just like last year I didn’t prepare anything. KillBeatz asked me if I have my speech ready and I told him no. then he said he had a feeling, KillBeatz never speaks of feelings and when he does it means it’s serious.

“So he asked me to write something and what I could think about me saying what I said at the end of my speech. I said when I came here same time seven years ago, I had seven nominations and I won zero,” King Promise said.

The “Terminator” hitmaker shared motivation to the up and coming artistes. He said they should keep working harder and never give up just as him and they will be recognised one day.

“Any young person watching me right now should use me as an example of resilience because I didn’t stop. When people laughed at me, it just served as fuel for me to work harder because as it was funny to them, for me I believe in God’s timing and look at me now, today I’m the chosen one,” he added.
