Hearts of Oak legend Joseph Tagoe has revealed that he earned only GH¢30 per week during his early days as a coach.

After retiring from football, Tagoe pursued another path in football by venturing into coaching. Upon acquiring his coaching license, he secured an opportunity to coach Ghanaian Division Two club James Town FC.

Although it was a chance to apply what he had learned, the experience was far from rosy. In an interview with Amansan TV, the legendary midfielder shared how the club paid him just 30 cedis per week for his services.

“I did a License D training course, and before you can progress to License C, you have to pay between GHS 6,000 and GHS 7,000. The team I was coaching paid me only 30 cedis every week. I appreciate the little things that happen in my life. Whenever I feel uncomfortable, I just move on,” he said.

“The football business in Ghana is not okay. I’ve come to realize that even coaches with License A, who have lots of experience, live in conditions where the cars they drive and the houses they live in make me feel like leaving football to become a coach is like jumping from the frying pan into the fire,” he remarked.

Before his retirement, Tagoe played for Hearts of Oak and later joined Ebusua Dwarfs. He recently humorously admitted that he once had to fake his age to secure an opportunity to play football in Egypt.
