Former Dreams FC striker Abel Manomey has opened up about his decision to turn down a lucrative football contract in Bahrain in order to pursue higher education.

Speaking in an interview with Linus TV on YouTube, Manomey explained that his choice was driven by a desire for long-term security beyond his playing career.

“Yes, it’s true. The move was lucrative, but I keep saying I’m thinking about longevity. I’ve seen a lot of footballers who are struggling, and it’s not their fault. They gave everything, but today, in their lowest moments, nobody is around them,” he said.

Manomey, who later completed his MPhil degree before joining the University of Stirling, emphasized that the experience was worth more to him than short-term financial gain.

EXPLAINER: Why Ghana’s World Cup qualifier against Comoros was not televised on local TV

“These were the things I saw, and I told myself MPhil is good. If I’m in my second year and I struggled throughout the first year, why would I abandon it and go play football? I finished my MPhil before joining the University of Stirling, and I have no regrets about it,” he added.

The former Premier League forward has since become an advocate for combining education with football, encouraging young players to plan for life beyond their playing careers.
