Ghanaian musician, Mzbel, has disclosed the emotional toll she often experiences whenever she recalls her failure to address the intense backlash and false allegations she faced on social media in the past.

In an interview on Adom TV on November 30, 2024, Mzbel revealed that she often cries when reflecting on moments when she didn’t respond to negative comments and attacks on social media.

“I cry all the time, and lately, I’ve been crying more than before because of things I didn’t respond to. Now it hurts because people still use those things to attack me. It’s painful. Recently, the same thing happened, and I had to go live to address it, especially the insults. I am human with feelings, and if these things hurt me, I may respond in anger,” she confessed.

Mzbel also expressed frustration at how some people, particularly on social media, think they can disrespect her on social media and get away with it just because she’s a celebrity.

“Sometimes, you can check the social media pages of these people, and they’re not even worth the attention. I am way older than some of them, but because they think you are a celebrity, they can talk to you anyhow,” she said.

Reflecting on the damaging impact of online trolling, Mzbel mentioned the sad reality that many young female musicians have dropped out of the industry due to the emotional toll of constant online attacks, citing Raquel and Kaakie as examples.

“There are a lot of girls in our industry who have dropped out because of the trolls they constantly receive on social media. Look at people like Raquel and Kaakie, they dropped out because of the same issue,” Mzbel explained.

She also took the opportunity to advise young female musicians, urging them to focus on enjoying their craft and believing in themselves.

“Young artistes should enjoy what they are doing, because if you don’t enjoy it, you’re wasting your time. When you perform on stage, don’t seek validation from your audience. If you do, a two-minute song will feel like an hour,” she said.

Mzbel also encouraged artistes to remain authentic and true to themselves while performing, adding, “I know some artistes who look programmed when on stage. While it may be working for them now, one day they might forget themselves, and that will go against them. So they should try to stay original.”
