Former Asante Kotoko defender Atta Kusi has expressed regret over his decision to pursue a career in football, while also criticizing Ghanaian clubs for the meagre salaries paid to players in the domestic league.

The 32-year-old has enjoyed a lengthy career in the Ghana Premier League, representing top clubs like Asante Kotoko and Ashanti Gold. However, in an interview spotted on TikTok, Kusi disclosed the immense challenges of building a successful career as a footballer in Ghana.

Having decided to stop playing in the Ghanaian league due to frustrations, Kusi lamented his career choice, citing the inadequate salaries compared to what players earn in other countries.

“I honestly regret playing football. It pains me that I didn’t learn a trade or focus on education. If I had, I’d be earning a better salary than what I got from playing football in this country,” he said.

Kusi also revealed that he had to seek financial assistance from friends, while urging young players to strive for opportunities abroad.

“It’s humiliating to have to beg my friends, who are mechanics and electricians, for pocket money,” he lamented. “I would advise all upcoming players to work hard and seek opportunities outside the country. It’s extremely challenging to build a successful career as a footballer here.”

Kusi last featured for Heart of Lions during the 2023/24 season, making six appearances as the club narrowly avoided relegation on the final matchday.
