The Chief Executive Officer of Don Boxing Promotions, Michael Annan, has expressed deep frustration over what he describes as calculated attempts by some members of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) to undermine his work and that of other investors in the local boxing industry.
According to Annan, he has suffered significant financial losses in his efforts to revive and promote the sport locally. He attributed these losses to resistance and hostility from within the very body responsible for overseeing boxing in Ghana.
Annan called for boxing promoters to establish an independent body separate from the GBA for effective regulation and management of the sport.
‘Come on Ghana!’ – Why it’s time to teach Comoros a lesson
“Let us do things the right way. Promoters should have their own independent body, separate from the GBA, to regulate the sport so that nobody can just wake up one day and call himself a promoter. I watch some fights and I know promoters mean well for boxing. They spend a lot, but I know they end up throwing money into the gutter just like I did,” he said during an interview with Game TV.
He further disclosed that sabotage by some individuals within the boxing fraternity had negatively affected his promotional ventures.
“I just threw money into the gutters; it wasn’t going anywhere. And it’s because of the way we want to handle boxing. There are people within the system who will make sure you fail—because if you don’t fail, they don’t make money. It’s all about visa racketeering. Sometimes, people just don’t like the truth,” he added.
