President John Dramani Mahama has expressed hope that the Black Stars will excel and make history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

He cited the University of Development Studies (UDS) men’s team winning the 2025 World Universities Football Championship beating Brazil as a major achievement for Ghanaian football.

The president noted that he expects the national team to build on their performance gradually and reach peak form by the time the tournament begins.

Speaking to Sporty FM following Ghana’s qualification, President Mahama stated that he hopes the Black Stars will become the first African country to reach the World Cup final.

“I believe that the opportunity to return to the world stage and showcase what Ghanaians can do is something we’re all looking forward to. Just recently, the University of Development Studies came to me with a trophy they had won in the World University Soccer Competition, beating no mean team like Brazil.

“So I believe we should take it step by step, and like we almost did in South Africa, become the first country to go beyond the semifinals and into the finals of the next World Cup,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars qualified for the 2026 World Cup after defeating Comoros 1–0 at the Accra Sports Stadium, finishing top of Group I with 25 points.
