True love may be the theme of many of her songs, but for Tiwa Savage, it is a feeling that she is yet to encounter.
In an interview with British-Nigerian media personality ZeZe Mills, Tiwa spoke about her past romantic experiences and how they have shaped her view of love.
According to the musician, despite her fame and success, she has never truly felt loved in a romantic relationship.
Looking back on her marriage to Tunji Balogun, also known as Teebillz, which lasted from 2013 to 2018, Tiwa said she once believed what she had was love, but now sees things differently.
Tiwa Savage, who is a mother to 10-year-old Jamil, said the only pure and genuine love she has ever known is the one she shares with her son.
According to her, this love is real and unconditional, unlike what she has experienced in her romantic life.
“I don’t think I’ve been loved for a very long time. I don’t think I’ve experienced true love apart from my son. Every time I look back at my relationship, I realise that it wasn’t love it was just infatuation. At the time, I thought it was love though, but it wasn’t,” she said.
After years of trying to find a partner who truly understands and loves her, the singer said she has now come to terms with the possibility that love might not be in her destiny.
“I don’t think I’ve experienced that soulmate thing, I’ve tried over and over again. I don’t think love is for me in this lifetime,” she added.
