Sultana Nazif, the daughter-in-law of the Emir of Kano, revealed her strong conviction against adopting her husband’s surname after marriage.

The 24-year-old daughter of Senator Suleiman Nazif from Bauchi State and Emir Sanusi’s son, Ashraf Adam Sanusi, married in August 2024.

On Instagram stories, a fan questioned whether she had changed her name to Sultana Sanusi, she responded that she doesn’t believe in a woman replacing her father’s name after marriage.

Sultana’s belief has been validated by internet users who claim that changing a woman’s maiden name after marriage is not customary in Islam.

The couple’s children may bear their father’s name, but the mother will continue to bear her father’s name.

Some netizens opined her belief was because of her family’s wealth.

    See comments below,

@Debby Ochanya Akogwu Muslim women don’t change their surnames. Even if they are married. Na still their father name them dey bear.

@islermer We dont change names in islam. It is Haram, the kids will carry your name while i carry my father’s name till the end

@Lilian Harrison Edeh I no change,I joined my hubby name. I got almost all my certificate before marriage….so,I still maintain my papa name.

@Halims Aliyah It is not about being rich. Islamically, ladies are not to change from their maiden name. I agree that some Muslims are doing it.
