Ghanaian rapper turned evangelist, Armstrong Affum, popularly known as Opanka, has disclosed details about his music career under his first management.

According to him, despite his hard work, he never made any financial gains.

Speaking in an interview on Neat FM, Opanka recounted how, despite producing hit freestyles and songs like ‘Obiaa Ne Ni Taste,’ he never earned a cedi.

He explained that he was more focused on growth and didn’t even realise the harm being done at that time.

“If I tell you that I didn’t make a dime for any of my hard work, will you believe me? That’s what happened.

“I never took any money for my performances. Not even 1 cedi. My management at the time told me they would use the money to build a recording studio for me, but even my music videos weren’t paid for,” he disclosed.

Opanka said he only discovered the extent of mismanagement of funds after hosting a birthday bash, where a DJ complained about not being paid.

He said attempts to get answers from his management only led to frustration.

“It got to a point where anytime I composed a song, I used to pray that it would flop because I wasn’t making anything from it,” he admitted.

When asked why he agreed to such a deal, he said it was to avoid the narrative that artistes abandon their teams after success.

“I had no financial agreement with them. I over-trusted them. I wanted to get rid of that narrative that artists blow up and abandon the managements that helped them blow up,” he said.

Despite feeling betrayed, Opanka said he has now moved on from the painful experience.
